The Autódromo Internacional Ayrton Senna, located in Goiânia, Brazil, holds a significant place in Brazilian motorsport history. Opened in 1974, the circuit was designed to meet the growing demand for high-quality racing venues in Brazil, a country with a deep passion for motorsport.
Named after the legendary Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna, the track honours his legacy and impact on the sport, making it a revered site for fans and racers alike. Over the decades, the circuit has hosted a wide variety of motorsport events, including MotoGP, Stock Car Brasil, and Copa Truck.
Its layout, spanning 3.835 km (2.383 miles) with 12 challenging turns, is known for combining fast straights with technical sections that test both driver skill and machine performance. The venue has undergone multiple renovations to modernize its facilities while preserving its original charm. It features ample spectator areas, including grandstands and general admission zones, providing fans with excellent views of the on-track action.
The Brazilian Motorcycle Grand Prix was first introduced to the Grand Prix motorcycle racing calendar in 1987, held at the Autódromo Internacional Ayrton Senna in Goiânia. The event continued at this venue until 1989. After a brief hiatus, the Grand Prix returned in 1992, this time at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in Interlagos, São Paulo. However, due to various challenges, including organizational issues and safety concerns, the event was discontinued after the 1992 race.
In 1995, the Grand Prix found a new home in Rio de Janeiro, rebranded as the Rio de Janeiro Motorcycle Grand Prix. This event was hosted at the Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet, commonly known as Jacarepaguá, and continued annually until 2004. During this period, the race became notable for multiple victories by riders such as Valentino Rossi, who secured six wins across different classes.
